Classes/ Divisions
Take note, we have changed our classes and divisions to better suit Hawaii riders. If you have suggestions email Heather at cowhorsechick@msn.com
Classes
Ranch Cutting- NCHA rules apply with the exception of no penalty for the use of reins. Class consists of working a cow out of the herd.
Reining- NRHA rules apply for all reining classes. Horses must be shown in NRHA approved headgear. Headstall, bits, reins, curb strap etc. Also a snaffle bit will be allowed with no age limit for contestants entering the Greener Than Grass division. Simple lead change is permissible in the Greener Than Grass class. Patterns may be found at www.NRHA.com and will be posted at the show.
Limited Bridle Horse (boxing only)- NRCHA Limited Bridle Horse rules apply with the exception of using any bit regardless of the age of the horse. Consists of a NRCHA reining pattern and boxing only. Class does not include turning the cow on the fence. Patterns may be found at www.nrcha.com and will be posted at the show.
Cow Horse Two Steppin'- Open to all beginners. Class combines reining pattern and tracking of cow. Very simple reining pattern that consists of a figure eight, stops, turns and back up. Simple lead changes are permissible. Cow work entails moving a cow from one end of the arena to the other end, between the fence and a cone and out an open gate. Contestants will be judged on control and smoothness of tracking the cow. There will be a three minute time limit.
Divisions
Open- Includes all riders regardless of show experience or winnings.
Limited Open- Limited to two types of riders. If you qualify as a non-pro by NRHA, NCHA or NRCHA rules then you may enter this class. The second type of rider is a trainer who have very limited experience in the class discipline. For example, if the rider is a reining trainer but does not have experience in ranch cutting they can enter the limited open division of ranch cutting but they must enter the open division for reining. You must enter the open division in a discipline if you give lessons in that discipline. For example, if you give lessons in cutting, including on a dummy, then you may only enter the open cutting class. If you give lessons in reining you may only enter the open reining class.
Greener Than Grass/ Youth- The purpose of the Greener Than Grass/ Youth division is to provide beginning riders and/ or horses and Youth the opportunity to become acquainted with basic reined cow horse skills in a competitive, yet non-threatening environment. This division is created to encourage people/ green horses to try something new without being intimidated by having to compete against seasoned riders or horses. This division is also open to first year cow horses and all Youth competitors no matter their experience. Horses must be shown in NRCHA or NRHA approved headgear. Headstall, bits, reins, curb strap etc. Also a snaffle bit will be allowed with no age limit. PHS has the right to determine if a rider or horse is eligible for this class.
For reined work the same rules as NRHA or NRCHA, except:
- Rider may use two hands with snaffle if necessary
- Rider does one or one & half spins only instead of the pattern specified number.
- Rider may break down to a trot for a lead change with no penalty.
- Rider may break down to a trot before stopping with no penalty. A sliding stop is not required.
For cow work (boxing only) same rules as NRCHA, except:
- The same penalties apply except the no score for losing the cow a second time. (The 3 point penalty will apply.)
Buckles
